Born to a Hindu family in Puna, Maharashtra, Tannishtha completed her graduation in chemistry from Delhi University. She is also an alumna of The National School of Drama, New Delhi and is a regular stage artist in India and Europe's theatres. Tannishtha Chatterjee made her acting debut with art film Swaraj winning National Film Award.
Known as Princess of Art Cinema or Parallel Cinema, Tannishtha Chatterjee won her first international award for Partho Sen-Gupta's film Hawa Aney Dey at Durban International Film Festivals. Later she did more films however she did not appear in any commercial film.
Tannishtha is a trained Hindustani classical vocalist and has sung for movies like Road, Page 3 as well as Royal Opera House, London.
