Shruti Rajalakshmi Haasan was born to film star Kamal Haasan and Sarika in Chennai. She studied at Abacus in Chennai and moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St. Andrew’s College. She also attended Musicians Institute in California, USA. Her younger sister Akshara represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing.
She began her singing career at the small age of six in her father’s Thevar Magan in the composition of Ilaiyaraaja. She sang in the Hindi language first in film Chachi 420. She also lent her voice in bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil for the movie Hey Ram. Her best acclaimed song was in Imran Khan starrer Luck-Aazma Luck Aazma.
Shruti started off her acting career with Hey Ram, where she played a cameo role. Her 2009’s action drama, Luck marked her debut in Bollywood. She later went on to win critical acclaim for her role in the Walt Disney fantasy film, Anaganaga O Dheerudu, Oh My Friend and 7aam Arivu. In 2012, she starred in Gabbar Singh, Telugu remake of Dabangg which also was her first hit as an actress. She also signed her third Hindi film Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya, which will release in 2013.
