Kalki Koechlin was born to father Joel Koechlin and mother Francoise Armandie in Kallatty, a village near Ooty. Her parents were hardcore devotee of Sri Aurobindo. Her ancestor Maurice Koechlin, was a French structural engineer, who designed the Eiffel Tower. Kalki studied in Hebron School and studied drama and theatre in Goldsmiths, University of London. She also worked for Theatre Company named the Theatre of Relativity. Kalki is gifted with multilingual ability and posses a good command over Tamil, English and French. She married director cum screenplay writer Anurag Kashyap in 2011.
She rose to fame through her debut Dev D which was the modern depiction of old novel Devdas written by Sharat Chandra. She played the role of modern Chandramukhi. She had to learn hindi for the role. Hindustan Times quoted about Kalki post performance in Dev D, “Enter Chanda, and the multilingual call girl who can seduce in Hindi, Tamil, English and French. With her bee-stung lips, unusual face and refreshing lack of acting guile, Kalki Koechlin imbues the part with a touching fragility."
She performed her best in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara as Natasha and gave life to her character. Kalki was seeing Anurag from the shoot of Dev D and got hitched with him who had same interests of writing screenplays like Kalki had and both co-wrote That Girl In Yellow Boots and got mixed reviews on it.
