Anurag Kashyap was born into a middle class family at Gorakhpur, UP, where his father worked for the state electricity board. He grew up in several cities, including Varanasi, Saharanpur and Obra. He did his early schooling in Dehradun and eight onwards at the Scindia School in Gwalior.
He was fascinated with films right from childhood. Even at age five, would watch Hindi films like Kora Kagaz and Aandhi at a nearby club and open-air theater.
He was very clear about his goals and at early age he landed in Mumbai. Where he got work at Prithvi Theatre for some time, he started his career with story writing and later went into direction. This is not enough for his ambitions and dreams, he also enrolled name in production and come out the huge success. His first write up is for movie Staya and first directed short film is Last Train to Mahakali.
In personal life, Anurag was earlier married to Aarti, his college sweetheart whom he dated for nine years before getting married. They have a daughter Aaliya. But after spilt up with Aarti, he got married to actress Kalki Koechlin.
